There are a number of stories for these fellows. One tale tells of a man who was lost in the hills until he came across a small cabin in the growing darkness. Relieved to have found some shelter he decided to stay there for the night. He was so exhausted from walking all day he fell fast asleep. Imagine his shock when he awoke in the morning to find both the cabin and the bed had disappeared and he was lying on the edge of a cliff. One small roll over in his sleep and he would have fallen to his death. This is unfortunately a common trick for the dwarves.

A similar story of a weary traveller finding a cabin for the night. And after building a fire to keep warm he is accosted by a Dwarf who is angry at him for using his firewood. He was so scared after the dwarf left that he slept sitting up all night....Only to discover on waking, much like the other tale, that he was right on the edge of a cliff.
